What to expect

Folly Dolly Falls is a relatively small waterfall, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in atmosphere. Water cascades approximately 10 metres (around 32 feet) over layers of Carboniferous sandstone into a secluded woodland gorge, creating one of the Holmfirth area’s most photogenic hidden locations. The exposed rock face is also recognised as a Local Geological Site thanks to its fascinating sandstone formations and geological history. 

Finding the waterfall is part of the adventure. From the Meltham Greenway, a former railway line now used as a walking and cycling trail. A small gap in the fence leads to a steep, uneven path descending into the valley. There are no official signs directing visitors, giving the falls a true hidden-gem feel. Good footwear is recommended, particularly after wet weather when the ground can become muddy and slippery. 

We’ve found Folly Dolly Falls to be one of those places that rewards a little exploration. While it isn’t one of Yorkshire’s largest waterfalls, its peaceful woodland setting, impressive sandstone cliff, and secluded location make it feel wonderfully undiscovered. Pairing your visit with a walk along the Meltham Greenway or a trip into nearby Holmfirth makes for an excellent half-day adventure.
