What to expect

Wessenden Reservoir sits high within the Wessenden Valley, surrounded by open moorland and rugged Pennine scenery. The reservoir is part of a chain of reservoirs that follows the valley, with the surrounding landscape providing a peaceful contrast to the nearby towns and villages.

A well-established walking route follows the valley and passes the reservoir, with the Pennine Way running through the wider Wessenden Valley. The open landscape provides expansive views across the surrounding moors, while gritstone outcrops and patches of heather add character to the route.

The reservoir is particularly atmospheric in changing weather, with mist and low cloud often creating a dramatic Pennine landscape. Paths can become muddy and waterlogged following periods of rain, while the exposed nature of the moorland means conditions can change quickly.
