What to expect

Wessenden Head Waterfall sits alongside the upper section of the Wessenden Valley, where water flowing from the surrounding moorland cascades down a series of rocky shelves. The waterfall is relatively understated during dry periods but can become considerably more impressive after heavy rainfall, when the stream cuts dramatically through the dark gritstone landscape.

The waterfall can be viewed from the Pennine Way, which passes through the Wessenden Valley. Reaching the waterfall from the Wessenden Head Road parking area involves a walk through open moorland and alongside the reservoirs, with the surrounding landscape providing impressive views throughout the route.

There is a faint path leading closer to the base of the waterfall, but the descent is steep, muddy and slippery, particularly after rainfall. The surrounding moorland is exposed and conditions can change quickly, so suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Wessenden Head Waterfall is best enjoyed as part of a wider walk through the valley rather than as a standalone roadside attraction.
