What to expect

The current Stoodley Pike monument was completed in 1856, replacing an earlier structure built in 1814 to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon. Standing approximately 37 metres tall, the monument has become an enduring landmark above the Calder Valley and can be seen from many miles away.

The walk to the monument takes you across open moorland, with the final approach revealing increasingly impressive views across the surrounding landscape. From the base of Stoodley Pike, the monument itself provides a striking focal point, while the elevated position offers expansive views towards the Pennines and Calder Valley.

The landscape around Stoodley Pike is exposed and can feel dramatically different depending on the weather. Paths can become muddy after rainfall and conditions can change quickly, so suitable footwear and clothing are recommended. On a clear day, however, the combination of open moorland, distant hills and the distinctive monument makes this one of West Yorkshire’s most memorable viewpoints.
