Ingleborough
North Yorkshire
Ingleborough is one of Yorkshire’s most iconic mountains, rising to 723 metres (2,372 feet) above sea level and forming one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks.
Its distinctive flat summit can be seen for miles across the Yorkshire Dales, while the surrounding landscape of limestone pavements, caves, waterfalls, and sweeping valleys makes it one of the county’s most spectacular walking destinations.
Whether you’re taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, enjoying one of the many circular routes to the summit, or exploring the remarkable limestone scenery at its base, Ingleborough offers an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Ingleborough and the surrounding Yorkshire Dales landscapes.

What to expect
As the second-highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Ingleborough is one of the region’s most recognisable landmarks. Its broad, flat summit was shaped over millions of years by glaciation and erosion, while the surrounding limestone landscape has created one of Britain’s most important cave systems, including nearby Gaping Gill, where Fell Beck disappears into the mountain before plunging into one of the country’s largest underground chambers.
Several walking routes lead to the summit, each offering a different perspective of the mountain. The popular route from Ingleton passes through limestone scenery and open moorland, while the climb from Clapham follows the picturesque Clapham Nature Trail before ascending across the mountain’s western slopes. On a clear day, the summit rewards walkers with spectacular panoramic views across the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, the Forest of Bowland, the Howgill Fells, and even as far as the Isle of Man.
We’ve found Ingleborough to be one of Yorkshire’s most rewarding mountains. While the ascent is challenging, the ever-changing scenery, fascinating geology, and breathtaking summit views make every step worthwhile. Whether you’re ticking off one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks or simply enjoying a day in the Dales, Ingleborough is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
