What to expect

Whernside reaches 736 metres, making it the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the highest mountain in Yorkshire. Its summit lies along a broad ridge, with the mountain’s distinctive profile visible from across the surrounding valleys. The terrain is predominantly open moorland, with stone paths and exposed sections leading towards the summit.

One of the most popular approaches begins at Ribblehead, following the famous Settle–Carlisle railway line before climbing steadily towards the mountain. The route passes through the dramatic landscape surrounding Ribblehead Viaduct before reaching the high-level ridge. Other routes approach from Ingleton or Horton-in-Ribblesdale, with Whernside forming a central part of the Yorkshire Three Peaks route.

Conditions on Whernside can change quickly. Strong winds, rain, mist and low cloud can make navigation and walking considerably more difficult, even when conditions are pleasant in the valleys. The summit itself is relatively broad rather than sharply defined, so good visibility and appropriate navigation equipment are particularly important in poor weather.
