What to expect

Lumsdale Valley is home to a series of beautiful waterfalls that flow along Bentley Brook, creating one of the Peak District’s most picturesque woodland walks. Rather than a single waterfall, visitors will discover multiple cascades and pools as they follow the path through the valley, each framed by moss-covered rocks, mature woodland and the remains of former industrial buildings.

The valley was once a thriving centre for cotton spinning, grinding and bleaching during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the preserved ruins of mills, waterwheels and stone buildings stand alongside the waterfalls, offering a fascinating glimpse into Derbyshire’s industrial past. The combination of natural scenery and historic architecture makes Lumsdale unlike anywhere else in the Peak District.

We’ve found Lumsdale Waterfall to be one of Derbyshire’s most photogenic locations. Every twist in the path reveals another cascade, historic ruin or woodland view, making it a place that’s just as enjoyable for photographers as it is for walkers. Although it’s only a short distance from Matlock, the peaceful atmosphere makes it feel wonderfully secluded.
