Stanage End
South Yorkshire
Stanage End is the northern end of the iconic Stanage Edge, where the dramatic gritstone escarpment begins to give way to the rugged moorland of the Dark Peak.
Quieter than the central section of Stanage Edge, this exposed landscape offers impressive panoramic views across Hope Valley and surrounding hills, with a sense of remoteness that makes it particularly appealing to walkers and photographers.
With its weathered gritstone formations, open moorland and expansive views, Stanage End is a rewarding place to experience the wilder side of the Peak District.

Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Stanage End and the surrounding Peak District.

What to expect
Stanage End forms the northernmost section of the long Stanage Edge escarpment. The landscape becomes increasingly open and rugged here, with weathered gritstone outcrops scattered across the moorland and fewer of the visitors found around the more accessible central sections of the edge.
The elevated position provides impressive views across the surrounding Peak District. Looking south, the long line of Stanage Edge stretches into the distance, while views east and north take in the Hope Valley, Derwent Valley and surrounding hills. On clear days, the distinctive shapes of several Peak District landmarks can be picked out across the landscape.
The terrain around Stanage End is exposed and uneven, with rocky sections and open moorland paths that can become muddy in wet weather. Its quieter atmosphere makes it particularly enjoyable for those looking to experience Stanage Edge away from its busiest viewpoints while still enjoying the dramatic scenery that makes this part of the Peak District so special.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!
Stanage End is part of a fragile moorland landscape that supports wildlife and is vulnerable to erosion. Please help protect it by following the Leave No Trace principles: stay on established paths where possible, take all litter home, leave plants, rocks and wildlife undisturbed, keep dogs under close control around livestock and nesting birds, and respect other visitors. Always park responsibly in designated parking areas and never block roads, gateways or access routes needed by residents, farmers or emergency service vehicles.
