What to expect
Wentworth Park is a landscape shaped by centuries of estate history. The park was developed during the 18th century, with landscape designer Humphry Repton undertaking work in 1790. Although parts of the original landscape have been changed by historic mining, traces of its former design remain, including avenues, woodland and ornamental lakes.
The deer park is one of the area’s distinctive features, with public footpaths providing views across the parkland towards Wentworth Woodhouse. The wider network of paths also connects to the serpentine lakes and neighbouring settlements, making it possible to explore beyond the immediate surroundings of the house. The Trans Pennine Trail passes through the deer park, offering a particularly good route for taking in the landscape.
Look out for the historic monuments and follies scattered throughout the estate. The Needle’s Eye, a striking sandstone pyramid with an archway through its centre, is one of the best-known landmarks. Hoober Stand and Rockingham Monument are further examples of the architectural legacy of the Fitzwilliam family, although access inside these monuments can be restricted or seasonal. Their exteriors can be viewed from public footpaths.

Explore Responsibly
Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!
Wentworth Park is part of a working rural estate, so please respect the countryside, wildlife, livestock and the people who live and work here. Keep to public footpaths and permitted routes, follow estate access restrictions and keep dogs on leads, particularly around livestock and deer. Take all litter home, avoid disturbing wildlife and take care around open water, uneven ground and former mining areas. Always park responsibly in designated parking areas and never block roads, gateways or access routes needed by residents, farmers or emergency service vehicles.
