Alderman’s Hill is a distinctive grassy summit overlooking Dovestone Reservoir in the Greater Manchester section of the Peak District.
Rising above the Saddleworth landscape, the hill provides wide-ranging views across the surrounding reservoirs, moorland and rolling hills.
The summit is reached by several walking routes, with the ascent from Binn Green offering a relatively short way to experience the hill and its impressive views. Its combination of open countryside, rocky features and views across the Dovestone Valley makes Alderman’s Hill a rewarding Peak District destination.

What to expect
Alderman’s Hill rises to around 453 metres above sea level and forms part of the high ground surrounding Dovestone Reservoir. Its broad grassy slopes contrast with the rocky features found elsewhere around Saddleworth, while the elevated position provides extensive views across the reservoirs and surrounding countryside.
One of the most popular approaches starts at Binn Green Car Park, crossing Holmfirth Road before climbing towards the Obelisk and continuing across the moorland. Routes can also be combined with nearby features including Pots and Pans, Dick Hill and the Saddleworth Trig Point to create a longer walk.
The summit itself is open and exposed, with a sharp ascent on some approaches. Paths can become muddy and difficult to follow in poor weather, while the combination of steep slopes and exposed moorland means conditions can change quickly. On clear days, the views towards Dovestone Reservoir and across the surrounding Peak District are particularly impressive.
