Boston Castle is one of Rotherham’s most distinctive landmarks, standing proudly above the town within the grounds of Boston Park. Built in the 18th century as a hunting lodge and folly, the building offers INCREDIBLE views across South Yorkshire and provides a fascinating glimpse into the area’s history.
Whether you’re visiting for the panoramic views, exploring the surrounding parkland, or learning more about the building’s heritage, Boston Castle combines local history with one of the best elevated viewpoints in Rotherham.

What to expect
Perched on a hill overlooking Rotherham, Boston Castle occupies a commanding position that has attracted visitors for generations. Despite its name, the building is not a castle in the traditional sense but a decorative folly constructed in 1775 by the 2nd Earl of Effingham.
The surrounding parkland offers open green spaces, mature trees, and pleasant walking routes, making it a popular destination for both local residents and visitors. The elevated setting provides expansive views across Rotherham and beyond, with the landscape stretching towards Sheffield and as far as the eastern tops of the Peak District on clear days.
We’ve found Boston Castle to be particularly rewarding when combined with a walk through Boston Park, allowing visitors to appreciate both the building’s historic character and its impressive location above the town. While smaller in scale than many of Yorkshire’s grand estates, it remains a fascinating and often overlooked piece of local heritage.
