What to expect

Roche Abbey was founded in 1147 and became home to a community of Cistercian monks who transformed the surrounding valley into a productive religious estate. The monks diverted waterways, cultivated the surrounding land and constructed an impressive monastery whose scale reflected the wealth and influence the abbey accumulated during the medieval period. Its story changed dramatically during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, when the community was disbanded and much of the abbey was subsequently dismantled.

Visitors today can wander among substantial remains of the medieval complex, including towering sections of the abbey church and its striking Gothic transepts. The surviving stonework gives a strong impression of the scale of the original monastery, while interpretation around the site helps reveal how its monks would have worshipped, worked and lived here hundreds of years ago.

Part of Roche Abbey’s appeal is its secluded setting. The ruins sit within a limestone valley beside Maltby Beck, surrounded by mature trees and open grassland. During the 18th century, renowned landscape designer Capability Brownreshaped parts of the valley to create a more picturesque landscape around the ruins, adding another chapter to the site’s long history. The combination of medieval architecture and peaceful countryside makes Roche Abbey particularly rewarding to explore at a relaxed pace.
