Practical details to help plan your visit to Carl Wark and the surrounding Peak District landscapes.

What to expect
Carl Wark is one of the Peak District’s most mysterious archaeological sites. Believed to date back more than 2,000 years, the hillfort occupies a naturally defensive gritstone plateau, with sections of ancient stone walls still visible today. Although much about its origins remains uncertain, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s prehistoric past.
The walk to Carl Wark takes visitors across open moorland and beneath dramatic gritstone outcrops, with expansive views opening up across Burbage Valley, Higger Tor, and the surrounding hills. The combination of rugged scenery and ancient history makes it a particularly rewarding destination for those looking to experience a quieter side of the Peak District.
We’ve found Carl Wark to be especially atmospheric during the early morning or late afternoon, when changing light enhances both the surrounding landscape and the weathered gritstone formations. While the terrain is generally straightforward, sturdy footwear is recommended, particularly after wet weather when paths can become muddy and uneven.
