Conisbrough Castle is one of South Yorkshire’s most impressive medieval landmarks, dominated by its remarkably well-preserved 12th-century cylindrical keep.
Rising above the historic town of Conisbrough, the castle combines dramatic medieval architecture with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside.
Built for the powerful de Warenne family, the castle later became associated with the House of York and was eventually immortalised in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. Today, visitors can explore the keep, castle grounds and exhibitions while discovering more than 800 years of history.

Exploring Conisbrough Castle
What to expect
The centrepiece of Conisbrough Castle is its extraordinary four-storey cylindrical keep, built from local Magnesian limestone in the late 12th century. Six huge wedge-shaped buttresses project from the tower, giving it a distinctive appearance unlike almost any other English castle.
Inside, visitors can climb through the keep’s historic chambers, including the great chamber and private apartments, while modern interpretation brings the people who lived and worked at the castle to life. The castle also contains a small chapel, exhibitions and displays exploring its history and its connection with Ivanhoe.
The castle’s elevated position provides impressive views across Conisbrough and the surrounding South Yorkshire countryside. The grounds also contain the remains of the curtain walls, towers and gatehouse, giving an impression of the scale of the medieval fortress. A modern visitor centre provides additional interpretation for visitors who prefer not to climb the keep’s stairs
