We last visited in early spring and it’s one of the best times of year to explore the estate. As winter loosens its grip, carpets of snowdrops peek through the undergrowth and colourful spring flowers start to brighten the historic gardens. Beyond the gardens, the surrounding parkland is filled with the sights and sounds of the season with playful lambs bounding across the fields.

Though the castle may look ancient, it was only built in 1731 by Thomas Wentworth and designed to look like the family had lived here for centuries after his cousin inherited the family home, Wentworth Woodhouse. Who doesn’t love petty family rivalries…
Not one for heights? The Earl’s Seat, around halfway up the gardens. It’s a fantastic place to stop off for panoramic views across the parklands without the 80+ steep steps.
